Winamp 5.9.1 adds support for NFT music library playback

The latest version of the storied Winamp music player is adding support for music non-fungible tokens.

According to the Winamp, NFT functionality is provided via exporting them from a supported platform and then importing them back into Winamp as a .m3u playlist file. The company provided a video guide for the process to Ars Technica.

Winamp's official press release states the following:

"Winamp’s latest version lets music fans link their Metamask wallet via Brave, Chrome, or Firefox to Winamp. It then connects their favorite music NFTs to their tried-and-true player. Winamp supports audio and video files distributed under both the ERC-721 and ERC-1155 standards, and is launching this new feature for Ethereum and Polygon/Matic protocols."

Winamp's aging tech makes less cumbersome support for these NFT music files out of reach, as its in-app web browser is based off of version 10 of Internet Explorer. The part of the Winamp install that supports NFT music files can also be removed both during the initial install period as well as after it's already installed.

Other features of Winamp 5.9.1 include optimizing its memory footprint, updating support of OpenSSL up to version 3.0.5, support for displaying non-Latin characters in Podcasts, and more. The release candidate for this update can be installed directly via the forum post linked below.
