Winamp is releasing its latest Windows desktop version, 5.9.1. This new version reduces Winamp’s memory footprint and upgrades security among many other improvements, but it also includes a new way to listen to the latest music format. Listening has just gotten a major web3 upgrade, thanks to these improvements. With more and more groundbreaking artists offering their work in NFT format, Winamp will make playing these audio NFTs simple and seamless.

“The genesis of Winamp has always been about accessibility and innovation, and today we are proud to launch the very first standalone player reading audio NFTs, as well as any other existing formats ,” explains Winamp CEO Alexandre Saboundjian. “This new version of Winamp allows people to listen to any file they want, using a player they already love.”

Winamp’s latest version lets music fans link their Metamask wallet via Brave, Chrome, or Firefox to Winamp. It then connects their favorite music NFTs to their tried-and-true player. Winamp supports audio and video files distributed under both the ERC-721and ERC-1155 standards, and is launching this new feature for Ethereum and Polygon/Matic protocols. Winamp’s 83 million worldwide users will be able to organize their library and playlists to incorporate these audio files, just as they would with any other music.

NFT support will soon be coupled with several other important updates that will make Winamp’s player a universal and most advanced listening library. The player will bring together music fans’ scattered experiences into a single, great-sounding place. These enhanced player features will be matched by a feature-rich creator service, linking artists and fans directly to the benefit of all. The service launch is planned for early 2023 and will be cross platform.

“Winamp was a key part of the first digital music innovation, when mp3s changed the way we listen and enjoy music,” explains Saboundjian. “Now we’re supporting the leading edge of the next one, as more and more artists explore web3 and its potential.”

Storied listening platform is rolling out new tools to bring creators and fans together simply and easily, and welcoming a first group of 25,000 creators with free access and exclusive perks.

Winamp, the listening platform with 83 million users worldwide, is ready to show the world a whole new side. It’s expanding to offer artists and audio creators a unified set of tools to take their career to the next level. From distribution and royalty administration to direct-to-fan services like subscriptions, Winamp is offering a simpler, more transparent toolkit for artists to find, reach, and gain support from fan communities, uniting services for today’s digital world.

It’s a logical next step for a brand trusted by millions as a go-to place for listening. “Winamp has long prided itself in creating the perfect place for fans to collect and enjoy their music,” explains Winamp CEO Alexandre Saboundjian. “Now creators can meet them there, forming direct connections right where many people are already listening—and where many more will soon join them. We’re offering creators control and transparency as they look for good ways to distribute, promote, and monetize their music.”

Winamp will roll out these new services and features to a select group of artists and audio creators who jump in first. Listeners, never fear: these services will be mirrored by enhancements and upgrades for music fans later this year, making Winamp the music superapp music lovers have longed for.

To kick off this new Winamp era and celebrate Winamp’s 25th anniversary, Winamp is inviting an exclusive first cohort of 25,000 creators to sign up and join the Winamp launch crew, starting August 16. These creators will get one year of free access to subscription-only premium tools, as well as a Creator Pass to commemorate the occasion and open up exclusive perks. These Passes will feature—what else?—the legendary Winamp llama, in 25 different guises inspired by creators’ wide range of music styles and genres. The 25,000-strong group will be the first and only artists to access Winamp’s creator side until full launch happens later this year.

These lucky first creators will be able to learn all about Winamp’s new features when the platform’s first tools unlock in September. As more and more tools and features become available over the coming months, artists will find more to explore. As they do, they’ll discover tools that are simple yet highly customizable, giving full control to the creator. For example, fan subscription tiers can be set at any price level. At the same time, creators will see that everything has been carefully tailored to their needs, incorporating not only promotional and fan-connection tools, but licensing opportunities, data visualization and analysis, and rights management, all in one place. The full launch of Winamp’s creator side will come in November, when it unveils FanZone, the space on Winamp where fans and creators meet.

“Our vision is to make Winamp the main place music lovers need to go,” Saboundjian says. “Fans have trusted us with their music. Now creators can trust us to support their work and careers.”

Creators can sign up to be one of the first 25,000 individuals to gain access to Winamp by visiting www.winamp.com/creatorpass/.

Since the inception of MP3, Winamp’s role in music history has always been clear: innovate and define the digital music experience.

Winamp aims to do the same for music today, in an era of expanding formats and closer artist-fan relationships, colored by a push for more independence and options from artists and by a deeply changed fan attitude toward paying for music and supporting music creators. Winamp is expanding to become the music superapp that can unite and balance the many creative forces at work in music right now.

The expanded Winamp will have substantial offerings for both fans and creators. Fans will soon have a single place to gather all their music and audio services, whether that music is enjoyed via a streaming service, radio station, podcast platform, or lives in file folders. They will be able to support their favorite artists directly and access exclusive goodies, also easily enjoyed via a gently upgraded Winamp player.

Creators will have even more useful tools and features at their disposal, as Winamp gradually unveils more of its bigger, better platform in the second half of 2022. They will be able to set up direct-to-fan subscriptions with custom tiers and pricing, to sell digital collectibles using NFTs, to license their tracks for sync and other purposes, to distribute their music to streaming platforms and to collect from CMOs thanks to Winamp’s sister company Bridger. All in a single app.

Other forward-thinking plans are in the works to allow artists to do more with new formats like NFTs and enhance the music listening experience. Yet Winamp’s original role--as the great unifier at the heart of the digital music revolution--will inspire this next chapter.

“We see ourselves as a hub, a central platform that will benefit all players in the business, be they established companies and services, artists, or fans,” says Winamp CEO Alexandre Saboundjian. “We aren’t here to disrupt, but to transform how we interact with music in a way that allows everyone to thrive and do what we all really want to do: make and savor amazing music.”
